Santa Barbara to King Harbor Sailboat Race Poster

Santa Barbara Yacht Club (SBYC) and King Harbor Yacht Club (KHYC) have had a long history of racing heritage. The Santa Barbara to King Harbor annual sailboat race is a downwind race that starts in Santa Barbara and rounds Anacapa Island, and finishes in King Harbor. Approximately 80 miles long, it is a competitive offshore race celebrated amongst sailboat teams and yacht club members.

TASK. We aim to design a wordmark and poster that reflects the strong relationship between the two yacht clubs.

SOLVE. This is a case study in simplicity. Collaborating with the race director David Sadecki, burgees from both clubs were highlighted as the spinnakers of the two racing boats. Informed by the Streamline era and the romance of the graphic style, an iconic poster was designed for the 47th annual race. SBYC Burgee was in the foreground because they were the sponsoring yacht club for this year.

OUTCOME. This is a downwind race, so the spinnakers are deployed and proudly displayed throughout the fierce competition. The clean and heroic sailboats give homage to the proud heritage of the prestigious sailboat
